Fouad Hussein, the Iraqi foreign minister, and Jennifer Gavito, the assistant secretary for Iraq and Iran, discussed the developments surrounding the Russian-Ukrainian conflict and the rise in oil prices. Gavito was received by Hussein in the presence of the American Ambassador to Iraq, Matthew Tueller, and the Director of National Security for Iraq and Syria, Zahra Bell, according to an announcement by the ministry.
They talked about bilateral relations between the two countries and ways to develop joint cooperation between Baghdad and Washington, as well as the situation in Iraq and the challenges facing the formation of a new Iraqi government. They also discussed the outstanding problems between the federal government and the regional government, as well as ways to find practical solutions to these issues.
A number of international and regional issues were discussed at the meeting, including issues of common interest, such as the security and military developments in Ukraine and how these developments affect the security situation in the region and the economy in particular. In discussions about the Vienna talks between the Islamic Republic of Iran, the United States of America, as well as other concerned countries, FM Hussein stated his wish to reach an agreement within the next short time period.
