Apple’s iPhone Duo pairs passport design with key compromises
DUBAI, United Arab Emirates / RankWire.AI / – Apple has entered the foldable market with the iPhone Duo, a book-style phone built around a wide passport shape, a less visible crease and a series of clear trade-offs. Priced from $1,999 in the US and Dh8,499 in the UAE, the device went on sale on October 23. Supply has been tight in several markets since launch. Buyers give up Face ID and a telephoto camera in exchange for a phone that opens into a small tablet.

The phone’s 5.4-inch outer display is wider and shorter than the cover screens of most rival foldables, making it easier to use with one hand. Opened, it reveals a 7.6-inch inner display, the largest screen ever fitted to an iPhone. Both screens share the same aspect ratio, a choice meant to let apps move easily between them. The Duo is 5.2 mm thick when open and 11.3 mm when closed, and it weighs 254 grams.
Display engineering is the Duo’s standout feature. A nano-texture cover layer on the inner panel cuts glare and helps hide the crease that has long troubled foldables. Apple says its custom polymer is 40% stiffer than materials used in other foldable devices. Beneath the screen, a titanium hinge with more than 100 components and carbon fiber support plates keeps the panel flat. Peak outdoor brightness reaches 3,000 nits on both displays.
Biometrics and cameras change
Apple has dropped Face ID on the Duo, relying instead on a Touch ID sensor built into the side button. The inner screen hides a 1080p FaceTime camera beneath its pixels, avoiding a notch or cutout on the main display. On the outside, a 12-megapixel Center Stage camera sits in a small hole-punch. At the back are two 48-megapixel cameras, a main and an ultra wide, while there is no telephoto lens.
The A20 Pro chip, made on a 2-nanometer process, combines a 6-core CPU with a 7-core GPU and dual 16-core Neural Engines. Apple says a new vapor chamber gives up to 35% better sustained performance than the iPhone 17 Pro. The chip family also powers the iPhone 18 Pro lineup, announced in September. Apple’s iOS 27 adds Split View, which lets two apps run side by side on the inner display.
Waiting lists stretch into 2027
Apple rates battery life at up to 24 hours of typical use across both screens and 31 hours of video playback on the inner display. Using a 60W adapter, the phone reaches 50% charge in about 20 minutes. The Duo is eSIM-only worldwide, and support for the USB-C Apple Pencil is expected before the end of 2026. Storage options rise from the $1,999 base model with 256GB to $3,199 for 2TB.
Supply has struggled to keep pace with demand. Apple’s delivery estimates in the US moved well into January 2027 shortly after preorders opened. In the UAE, some units have sold for up to Dh25,000 on the resale market, and some Dubai buyers have been given delivery dates in January 2027. Apple has also responded to reports of cracks appearing on some inner displays.
